1) Sri Venkateshwara National Park : 

Located about 10 km from Tirupati and on the Eastern Ghats, Venkateshwara National Park and biosphere reserve is home to endemic plant species and interesting fauna species like Slender Loris, Tree shrew, Wild dog etc.


Bird watchers are also in for treats like Crested Serpent Eagle, Indian Roller, Kingfishers etc. But the main attraction of this national park are the three waterfalls, viz, Talakona, Gundalakona and Gujana.

Talakona is the highest waterfall in Andhra Pradesh and needless to say, it is a stunning spectacle. With good Forest guest houses and accommodation facilities available, one can spend an entire day here.

2) Papikondalu National Park :

Covering a significantly vast area of over 1000 km square, Papikondalu National Park in Andhra Pradesh's East and West Godavari districts is a beautiful forest reserve offering stunning views of nature and rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The area was declared as a national park only recently in 2008.
With River Godavari running through the National Park and enriching its allure, Papikondalu is situated ideally between East and West Godavari. The diverse topography of Papikondalu is remarkable. It supports densely forested hills, valleys, deep gorges, and streams, giving life to all forms of wildlife and vegetation.

Best time to visit :

The best time to visit the national park is from October to May when the temperatures lie comfortably between 24 degrees C to 31 degrees C during winters. Between 35 degrees C and 28 degrees C during summers. Expect a little humidity in the summer months, but the natural surrounding keeps you fresh. So you won't be sweating under the scorching sun.

How to reach Papikondalu National Park:

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Visakhapatnam, about 100 km away from Papikondalu National Park. You can hire a private taxi from there.
  • By Railways: The nearest station is Rajahmundry, 4.5 km away from Papikondalu National Park. The station lies on two main routes – Chennai to Kolkata and Chennai to Delhi. You can take a rickshaw or taxi from the station to the national park.
  • By Road: There are several private and government-owned transport services available from nearby cities – Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, and more.
  • By Water: You can also reach Papikondalu National Park via boats. These run on frequent intervals from Rajahmundry.

3) Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary : 

Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh is more just an ordinary wildlife sanctuary. It is also the only sanctuary in the state to have a sizeable population of Asian elephants which have migrated from the neighbouring states.


4) Nagarjunasagar Wildlife Sanctuary :

A paradise for nature lovers and wildlife buffs, Nagarjunasagar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Srisailam and is often referred to as Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Sanctuary.

Established over a huge area of nearly 3568 sq. kms, this land rich in flora and fauna lies adjacent to Nagarjunasagar Reservoir. In fact, its massive area covers five districts of Kurnool, Prakasam, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar and Guntur. Apart from being declared as a 'Tiger Reserve' in 1983, this place also inhabits several other species including langur, jackals and macaques etc.

The sanctuary is also home to around 150 species of birds which include grey hornbill and pea fouls. Reptiles like monitor lizard, pythons, soft-shelled turtles and marsh crocodiles also call this place as their home. The area is also adorned with River Krishna which flow through Nallamala Hills providing all the inhabitant's source of water. Travellers will also find guesthouses, temple and cottages within the sanctuary premises.

5)  Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary :

Merely 22km away from the Kakinada Beach, Coringa is a Wildlife Sanctuary as well as an estuary. It is home to as many as 35 species of mangrove plants, 120 species of rare birds and innumerable species of flora. This sanctuary is also famous for being home to the critically endangered white-backed vulture and long-billed vulture. Coringa is known to be one of the favourites among eco-tourists. Since it is an estuary, you can also get a stunning view where the sea meets the river.

20 kms away from Kakinada, this wildlife sanctuary is spread across 235 square kilometres. There are wide wooden bridges built through the dense forest lands that allow you to walk through the forest looking at Flora and Fauna. Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is famous and well-known for its saltwater crocodiles and various salt-tolerant species of flora like Avincinia, Rhizophora and many more. The region also sees heavy growth of herbs and shrubs.

Best time to visit :

The climate is mostly hot and humid with temperature going as high as 47 degrees Celcius during summer months of May to June and falling to 14 degrees Celcius during winter months, from December to January. It is preferable to visit Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary anytime between October to May.

How to reach coringa wildlife sanctuary :

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of around 18 km from Kakinada on the Kakinada-Yanam state highway.

  • Air: Rajahmundry is the nearest airport. It has direct flights from the major cities and connecting flight from others. From here to Coringa, cabs can be hired, the drive would take anything between 1-2 hours.

  • Rail: Kakinada is the nearest railway station about 20 kms away from Coringa. Taxies and state buses are available form here to the sanctuary.

  • Road: Coringa is at a distance of 20 kms from Kakinada and 70 kms from Rajahmundry. Local cabs and buses are available to travel to and fro from the wildlife sanctuary.

  • Sea: Kakinada is also the nearest seaport.

6) Gundla Brahmeswaram Wildlife Sanctuary:

Gundla Brahmeswaram Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh covers a large area of around 1,194 sq. km from Prakasam to Kurnool districts. Animals that can be spotted here include tigers, wild dogs, sloth bears, panthers, and pythons. There is also a river that flows through the sanctuary. The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is between the months of May and October. The Gundla Brahmeswaram Wildlife Sanctuary is known to be last surviving pristine forests of Nallamalai tract where traditional applications of the plants still survive in ethno-botanical value.

7) Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary : 

A wildlife sanctuary spread across an area of 614sq kms in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, Rollapadu offers its visitors a journey into the wild, close to nature, amidst a number of diverse species of flora and fauna. Established in 1988, Rollapadu is especially known for being the home to the endangered species of The Great Indian Bustard and Lesser Florican. The wildlife sanctuary, spread across the huge area is the home to many birds and reptiles.

Best time to visit :

Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary is best visited during the winter season, i.e. between November and February. Kurnool experiences temperatures between 25ᵒC and 26ᵒC. The minimum reaches 17ᵒC in the coldest months (December and January) and the maximum stays around 30ᵒC.
Every year, between June and September, Kurnool receives rainfall around 660 mm. Tourists can skip the season, but if the rains are too tempting, they may head to the sanctuary by the end of the monsoons which is in the month of September/ October when the forest is lush green and the atmosphere is extremely pleasant. Throughout the season, the sanctuary has temperatures between 32ᵒC and 23ᵒC.
The summer season is not recommended because the mercury level usually reaches 39ᵒC during the peak months. Mornings and evenings, however, could provide some respite for the ones who want to go on a safari ride at the Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary. The average daytime temperature during this season is around 32ᵒC.

How to reach :

Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary is located 43 kilometres away from Kurnool from where, the only way to reach the sanctuary, is by the roadways. Renting a cab is the best option but taking a state transport bus can be an affordable one. The route from Kurnool to the reserve goes via NH 40 – SH 50. Travellers need to take the New Bus Stand Road on NH 40/ SH 50 and head towards Kurnool – Guntur Road. Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary is about 36 kilometres ahead from Kurnool – Guntur Road.

  • Air: Hyderabad Airport is the nearest airport, 60 kms away from the town, states buses, taxies and cabs are available from there to Kurnool.

  • Rail: The nearest railway station in Kurnool is 45kms away from the sanctuary and is well connected to the major stations in the state of Andhra Pradesh and major cities of the country. Shared cabs, taxies and buses are available to cover the rest of the journey.

  • Road: APSRTC runs buses from the major cities connecting Rollapadu. The nearest major city closest to Rollapadu is Kurnool which is 43kms away from the sanctuary. Kurnool is linked by road to the major cities of the state of Andhra Pradesh like Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Bangalore.

8) Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary:

Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh is the only natural habitat in the world where one can spot the highly endangered Jerdon's courser bird species. The sanctuary is also home to a large species for flora and fauna. It has dry deciduous forests with steep gorges and dramatic slopes.
